Picks from Lauderdale-by-the-Sea
Mansions and Mega Yachts
Water Taxi has to be the working embodiment of the adage that it’s about “the journey, not the destination.” They’ll get you to your destination- there are various stops between Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood- but meanwhile, you’ll be able to experience the “Venice of America” as it was meant to be traveled– by boat. Additionally the journey does have some taxis offering full bars and live entertainment.
Mansions and Mega Yachts
You can hop on at any of the taxi’s eleven stops, and cruise all day or jump off at any stop from Fort Lauderdale to Hollywood. Use your ticket to ride from the historic Stranahan House in downtown Fort Lauderdale to the beach, go for a walk and grab some lunch— then hop back on and head south down the Intracoastal Canal to Hollywood and its historic boardwalk. Or go north for dinner at local favorite Shooters Waterfront. The possibilities are endless with 165 miles of waterways to travel.
Marvel at modern high-rises, mega mansions, banyan trees and iguanas. But it’s likely the mega yachts that command the most attention from visitors. With nearly 50,000 registered yachts, Fort Lauderdale is known as the yachting capital of the world,
Happily, the captains and crew are mostly a local bunch who don’t mind dishing, along the lines of who owns that yacht or mansion along the Las Olas finger islands (known as Millionaire’s Row).
In fact, the tour is a narrated one, and you’ll pick up plenty of local history as well as gossip.
Pro tip: Ask about the “Cruise and Save” partners who offer discounts with a Water Taxi ticket.
Cocktails and Fishtails on Fort Lauderdale Beach
The mermaid shows at the Wreck Bar are a fab throwback to 1950s and 1960s Fort Lauderdale, when Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were fixtures in town and tiki culture was all the rage.
Cocktails and Fishtails on Fort Lauderdale Beach
The current mermaid shows are choreographed by lead mermaid Marina Anderson (mermaid name: MeduSirena), who has been swimming past the portholes of the Wreck since 2006. Marina is busy. Indeed, there appears to be a mermaid show for everyone- you’ll want to check the Wreck’s website for a current schedule, but regular offerings include:
The Aqua Burlesque Show
Adults only. Did we mention that this is the only underwater burlesque show in the US?
Aquamen Boylesque Show
The boys are back in town! The Aquamen show adds a splash of macho to the line-up.
Mermaids & Mimosas
Weekend brunch with bottomless mimosas. And photo ops!
The Coral Reef Mermaids
Bring the kids. An interactive, family-friendly show with an eco-friendly plot.
Fun Fact: The Wreck Bar was featured on the silver screen in the 1960’s “Where the Boys Are,” and more recently in “Analyze This” (1999).

From here, one of the experts will guide you to Fort Lauderdale Beach, where you can hopefully spot a nesting turtle at the turtle nesting grounds. Participants must be at least 9 years old, and they must be prepared to walk up to two miles in the sand. Bringing your own snacks is highly encouraged, and parking at the Museum is on a first-come, first-served basis. This $21 tour is until 1 a.m; being able to witness this wonder is truly magical, as any hatched turtles make their way to the ocean during the later hours of the night when the beaches have cleared. Tours will be running through August, and you’re going to want to reserve your spot now!

Plunge into Spring Break
Heading to South Florida this spring break? A trip to Fort Lauderdale is almost necessary. From the clear, warm, waters to the energetic nightlife, we’ve got your guide to a perfect itinerary.
Plunge into Spring Break
Start the day at Bean & Barnacle, where you can pair a latte with a tasty pastry or try a savory breakfast sandwich. This time of year gets very congested down A1A, with college spring breakers swarming the beaches. As a guest, we want to provide a space that’s a little calmer than most; Plunge Beach is patiently waiting. Accessible every day from 9 am - 6 pm, beachgoers can enjoy a full day by the water. Day passes to this area include 20% off the Backflip Beach Bar, parking, umbrellas (you don’t want to be left without shade in this Florida sun), and even seaside WiFi! Take a 10-minute walk down to Commercial Pier for a perfect backdrop to enjoy a snack. Make some time to scout The Galleria Mall for a night-out-on-the-town outfit and do some souvenir shopping before heading back to your room. Plunge Beach Resort is just about 10 minutes down the coast from Blue Martini where you can dance the night away. A full list of our favorite nearby activities can be found here.
Flashback to the Renaissance
Calling all pirates, vikings, steampunk time travelers, wenches, Celtics and faeries! From February 5th - March 20th, Quiet Waters Park, just a half an hour away from Plunge, will be transformed into the 16th century for the 30th Annual Florida Renaissance Festival.
Flashback to the Renaissance
Whether you want to spontaneously put together an outfit from the Artisan Marketplace, or you specifically plan your stay and wardrobe around a specific themed weekend, fully immersing into this timeline is part of the experience! A full list of shopping experiences can be found here. Families of all ages can find fun in every corner; anywhere from the Tomato Torture pit and The Brothers Blackquill: Improvised Plays, to zipping by on the Knights Flight Zipline and catching a comedic, twisted take on classic theatre, with Willy Nilly and his One-Man Shakespeare show. New to this year’s festival experience comes Dragons: The Gathering, the world’s largest touring exhibition of robotic dragons created by Dino Don, Inc., the leader in robotic animal displays. Guests 21+ can also partake in pubcrawls led by Village Pub Tour Guides. The group meets at the entrance daily at 1pm, and the ticket includes five beers!
No matter how you choose to experience the Renaissance era, it will surely be a festival you’ll want to return back to!

Discover the Bonnet House Museum and Gardens
A historic artist's estate on Fort Lauderdale Beach, the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens delivers tropical whimsy in early 20th-century style. The unforgettable estate was built in 1895 and has been home to two generations of artists. But for all the character and intrigue of the house itself, the real showstopper is the gardens. The property is built on a coastal barrier island that has been protected from commercial development over the years and so the ecological richness of the preserved strip is a feast for the eyes. Stroll along the well-marked nature trail on the property and take in the flora and fauna that once flourished in the region but is now found only here. Once you’ve filled up on fresh air outdoors, step inside the mansion and learn the story of two families who transformed a wild and unlikely piece of land into an artists’ sanctuary. The Bonnet House Museum and Gardens is open for self-guided tours Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, and on weekends from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Take a peek at their website for specific tour times and upcoming events.

A Taste of the Caribbean
Located in Hollywood is a market beyond your wildest dreams. Sample a variety of Caribbean flavors from local South Florida vendors as you explore the endless rows of artisanal goods, vegan food, hidden gems, and more. Voted on Yelp as one of the top things to do in Hollywood, the Yellow Green Market always offers a fun experience. It’s the perfect weekend activity, especially if you want to load up on fresh produce, have an unforgettable meal, and head home with one-of-a-kind gifts.
One of our favorite booths is True to Nature, where a very kind couple sells handcrafted and organic chemical-free body lotions, essential oils, and beauty products. We also love stocking up on handmade teas, local honey, and limited edition postcards and posters while we’re there.
Insider’s tip: when you see something you like, buy it! Avoid FOMO and load up on all the goodies while you’re there before returning to Plunge Beach Resort for a relaxing dip in the ocean.

Fort Lauderdale's 4th of July Spectacular
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is one of the most unique places to celebrate our favorite American holiday. The days are longer, the nights livelier, and of course, the ever-present draw of our closest neighbor, the Atlantic Ocean—and her gorgeous backdrop for our firework display—makes Independence Day by the sea a truly special event.
The best firework show in the county has to be the City of Fort Lauderdale’s 4th of July Spectacular. From noon until 9:00 p.m., join the festivities on Fort Lauderdale Beach at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard for live music (by The Beach Boys!) and DJs leading up to the glorious fireworks show.
Satisfy your cravings with food trucks and local grub booths, then live a little with exciting beach games and contests. There will even be a Kids' Zone with water slides, face painting, bounce houses, and games. This event is free to the public and all are encouraged to attend. Happy Independence Day!

Dive the Shipwreck Snorkel Trail
Ever wanted to get up close and personal with what lives beneath the waves? Here’s your chance at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, the Diving Capital of Florida.
Our coastal home is positively teeming with famous underwater sites, the best of which is the Shipwreck Snorkel Trail. The trail is a natural reef system located about a hundred yards off the shore. It has long been the most visited dive site in the area and is also known for its unbeatable visibility and plethora of marine life. Lobsters, along with nurse sharks, sea turtles, parrotfish, and stingrays frequent the area. Fishing is also allowed along the trail.
Embedded in the reef are five cannons, a ballast pile, and an anchor, all remnants from the days when pirates ruled the high seas. The depth ranges between twelve and sixteen feet, making the site perfect for those who prefer to snorkel or free-dive. No matter your preference, an underwater adventure is waiting beneath the sea.

Pegasus and Dragon
Perhaps one of South Florida’s quirkier attractions is the Pegasus and Dragon statue located in Hallandale Beach at Gulfstream Park. This is the second-largest statue in the United States, surpassed only by the Statue of Liberty, and was recently named the largest dragon and equine statue in the world. It’s more than just a convenient selfie background, however. At night, the statue comes to life with help from an impressive fountain show featuring hundreds of lights, water spouts, fog machines, and music.
Las Olas Gondola Tours
For the past 15 years, there has only been one true Venetian gondola operating in the Fort Lauderdale area, offering the privacy and novelty so often now lost to time. A cozy private gondola cabin, unobstructed by engines, drivers, or passengers, is your haven for the journey. Your gondolier stands at the bow of the vessel, out of earshot and out of view, transporting you safely at a lazy pace past million-dollar homes, rare flora and fauna, and into the horizon. If romance is what you’re searching for, this tour will provide you with tableware necessary for a picnic dinner and champagne or snacks, plus a personalized “message in a bottle” gift for the one most important to you.

Make a Splash This Season in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea
Whether you are visiting for the holidays or using time off for a sunny staycation, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea offers endless fun as the shore diving capital of South Florida. Visitors can experience natural coral reefs and brightly colored fish by swimming just 100 yards offshore--all you need is a set of fins and a mask. This season, take a break from the craziness of holiday preparations and check out two of our favorite dives:
SS Copenhagen - On a clear day, you’ll spot lobsters, sea turtles, nurse sharks, and eel at this diving destination. The SS Copenhagen is one of the only underwater archeological preserves in Florida. The steamship crashed into the coral reef in 1900 and exists only 15-30 feet below the surface, making it perfect for snorkelers and scuba divers alike.
Biorock Project - Located 700 feet offshore is an artificial reef project utilizing two solar-buoys, which speed up the growth of coral. It’s the first one of its kind in the United States and has worked as part of an effort to preserve Florida’s natural coral reefs while maintaining a diverse ecosystem.

The town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea doesn’t allow tall buildings to be constructed within its limits, which has helped it maintain its retro Floridian charm. At just 6,000 residents, the Broward County beach town is small and intimate. Local shops and restaurants line Anglin’s Square on either side, a waterfront plaza featuring Adirondack chairs, outdoor games, and live music year-round. A little over 100 feet away, Anglin’s Pier juts out into the Atlantic, offering visitors a fun day of fishing made easy.
The nearby reefs of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea are also a popular destination for scuba divers in South Florida. Snorkelers can find sea turtles, lobsters, and tropical fish swimming in the shallows. Whatever they seek, both locals and tourists can enjoy a more serene side of Ft. Lauderdale in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

A Brief History of Fort Lauderdale
After years of growth, Fort Lauderdale has rapidly become the renowned yachting and tourism destination we know it as today.
A Brief History of Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is home to a fascinating past. Before the colonial settlers arrived in Broward County, the Tequesta Native American Tribe resided there for over a thousand years, as well as the Miccosukee Tribe, who had also migrated to the southern part of the Everglades. With Henry Flagler’s construction of the Florida East Coast Railroad in the 1890s, urban development began, and the city was formally incorporated in 1911. With a Naval Air Station and Coast Guard Base, Fort Lauderdale later prospered as a major military hub during World War II. Following the war, the city became a popular spring break location with college students in the 1950s. Throughout the 20th century, Fort Lauderdale continued to expand, with initiatives like the downtown Riverwalk Project in 1986. After years of growth, it has rapidly become the renowned yachting and tourism destination we know it as today.
Introducing Our Plunge Into the Arts Program
Presented by Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District Partners, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, and History Fort Lauderdale’s New River Artist Corporation, our Plunge Into The Arts program provides a showcase for local artists with unique, fun, thought-provoking, and edgy art. It also supports our local arts community and venues like the Bonnet House and History Fort Lauderdale.
Introducing Our Plunge Into the Arts Program
The program features the work of two local artists at any given time—each artist exhibits their works for 30 days and works can include watercolor, acrylic, ceramic, photography, and more.
Every other Wednesday evening, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, an artist's open house will mark the launch of a new exhibit—and it all takes place right here at Plunge Beach Resort! While attendees will have the opportunity to informally meet the featured artist and view his or her works throughout the evening, there is a brief program starting at 7:15 pm, during which attendees can learn more about the artist's history, inspiration, and the pieces on display.
Attendees are invited to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and light appetizers throughout the event. Occasionally, the reception will include live demonstrations conducted by the featured artist.
Upcoming program dates include March 4th, March 18th, April 1st, April 17th, April 29th, May 13th, May 27th, June 10th, and June 24th.
We're also very excited to announce that Ellen Cohen-Berman is our new in-house curator for the Plunge Into The Arts program!

Unlock Mysteries at Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse
Florida’s most talked about place of interest is its pristine coastline and calm turquoise waters, beckoning visitors from all over the world to take in its dream-like tropical paradise.
Unlock Mysteries at Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse
But Florida’s breathtaking coast is also home to the ancient Florida Reef, an underwater coral formation lining the Eastern Coast. As beautiful as the reef is to dive and snorkel, it’s also treacherous to passing ships. The Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse has long stood watch over the majestic shoreline, guiding ships to safety.
During its time, the lighthouse has been the site of underdog tales, a slew of unexplained mysteries involving fires and German U-Boats, weathered powerful storms, and served as a beacon of neighborly engagement for the Hillsboro community. Today, guests can visit the Hillsboro Lighthouse (including the inside, all the way to the top) and uncover these mysteries for themselves. Meet your guide at Sands Harbor Boat Dock and cast off into an adventure.

Once you’ve had your fill of the outdoors, step inside the mansion and learn the story of two families who transformed a rough and ready piece of land into an artistic sanctuary. The Bonnet House is open Tuesday to Sundays. Take a look at their website for specific tour times and upcoming events.
